Divisions & Points

In each competition, you earn one point for every dancer you rank higher than. Additionally, you receive an extra point for each finalist you rank higher than.

You can compete in three different categories: Leader, Follower, and Role Rotation. Each category is divided into divisions. To be promoted to the next division, you must achieve a certain number of points and final placements.

Participation as a Leader or Follower is not gender-based. Dancers are free to choose the category in which they want to compete. Points are tracked separately for Leaders and Followers, allowing you to compete in both roles at an event — but not in the same division.

🏁 Newcomer

Requirements: No requirements
The Newcomer Division, if offered, is for those who have never competed before. Points cannot be earned to move to the next division. Teachers and professionals are not allowed.

⭐ Novice

Requirements: No requirements
The Novice Division is the main entry division where you can earn points to progress to Intermediate.

🌟 Intermediate

Requirements: 100+ points & 5+ final placements in Novice Division

💥 Advanced

Requirements: 100+ points & 5+ final placements in Intermediate Division

🏆 All-Stars

Requirements: 100+ points & 5+ final placements in Advanced Division

👑 Champions

Requirements: 100+ points & 5+ final placements in All-Stars Division

✨ Invitational

Requirements: By invitation of event organizer only

All points and division progression are tracked in real time via scoring.dance. You don’t need a Salsa Council ID (SCID) to compete — as soon as you earn 1 or more points, you’ll automatically receive one.
